The moment you miss a RIR target

Let’s say your workout called for something like this: 3 sets of 6 reps at a “RIR target” that assumes effort stays consistent.

Your RIR (reps in reserve: how many more reps you had left when you stopped) is the part you’re trying to control, not just the rep count.

So you start your set, hit 6 reps, and you feel like you would not have had 2 reps left. Maybe it feels like 0 or 1.

That’s a missed RIR, even if the reps look “fine.” And here’s where most people either:

  • keep the weight because the reps counted, or
  • panic and change everything because they feel “weaker.”

The better move is a specific next-set logic based on what exactly happened.

Your “same reps, lower RIR” pattern

The case we’re talking about is simple and common:

  • you hit the planned reps
  • but your RIR is lower than you planned

Example: the plan was 6 reps with 2 RIR (you expected 2 more reps in the tank). You got 6 reps, but it felt like 1 RIR or 0 RIR.

This is not a failure. It’s a signal.

When you get the same reps with a lower RIR, the load is effectively harder than you expected. That can come from fatigue, sleep, stress, minor form changes, or just a “bad day” that still counts.

Why “same reps, lower RIR” usually means the weight is too heavy

This part matters because it’s easy to rationalize.

If you only track reps, you can fall into a loop where you keep adding load even though the same set is stealing your recovery.

RIR is a proxy for how close you’re running to failure. Lower RIR means you’re closer to failure than planned.

So if the weight is giving you the same reps but taking more out of you, your ability to keep progress across sets and weeks is likely to drop.

That usually shows up as:

  • worse performance on later sets
  • more grinding
  • your next sessions feeling harder than they should

So the “next-set” rule has to protect you from chasing ego on a number that doesn’t reflect effort.

Next-set logic: keep reps, reduce load

Here’s the rule for the “same reps, lower RIR” scenario:

  1. Keep the rep target You already proved you can do the reps. Don’t change the rep plan because that would mix problems.

  2. Reduce load to restore your RIR target Because your RIR came in lower, you need to back off enough to bring it back toward the plan.

In practice, you can do this:

  • Drop 2.5% to 5% load from the bar for the next set when you missed by about 1 RIR.
  • Drop 5% to 10% load when you missed by about 2 RIR.

If you’re lifting in small plate jumps, use what you have. The key is direction: lower load, not “just try harder.”

  1. Keep technique consistent Same exercise, same stance, same range of motion. If your form has drifted, fix that first. Otherwise you might keep the same reps for the wrong reason.

  2. Re-check your RIR Don’t wait until the last rep. As soon as you feel like you’re out of reps in reserve, decide whether you’re going to keep grinding or stop. Your goal is to learn what the weight really costs today.

If you still can’t reach the intended RIR even after a small drop, that’s confirmation that your body needs a bigger adjustment.

A concrete example

Bench press set plan: 6 reps with 2 RIR.

Set 1: you hit 6 reps but it feels like 0 to 1 RIR.

Next-set rule:

  • Reduce load by about 5%.
  • Aim again for 6 reps.
  • Stop when you reach the target RIR, not when you reach pain.

If Set 2 now lands closer to 2 RIR, you’ve validated the adjustment. If Set 2 also comes in at 0 RIR, drop again or switch to a slightly easier variation for the session.

What not to do: the ego trap

The most common mistake is the “reps are reps” mindset.

“I hit my reps, so I kept my load the same. Progress is progress.”

That thinking can work for a while when you’re fresh, but it breaks once fatigue accumulates. Then you’re not progressing, you’re surviving.

If your RIR trend (how your RIR changes over time across sessions) starts sliding downward at the same reps and weights, you’ve lost the margin you needed to keep improving.

That margin is how progressive overload (gradually increasing training stress over time) stays sustainable.

How this fits your longer plan

You’re about two years into training, which usually means you’re past the “everything works” phase and into the “data matters” phase.

In a good mesocycle (a multi-week training block), you’re not just collecting reps. You’re managing effort.

So when you miss a RIR target, treat it like feedback, not like a moral score.

  • If you miss by a little and your reps hold, you reduce load next set.
  • If you miss by a lot, you may need a bigger reduction or a different rep scheme.
  • If you keep missing RIR for multiple sessions, you likely need a deload (a short lighter period to recover) or a reset in intensity.

Quick decision chart for “same reps, lower RIR”

Use this as a mental checklist mid-session:

  • Reps hit target, RIR 1 lower: reduce load 2.5% to 5% for next set
  • Reps hit target, RIR 2 lower: reduce load 5% to 10%
  • Reps hit target, RIR 3+ lower: reduce load more or consider a lighter variation and fewer hard sets
  • Reps miss target too: reduce load more and consider adjusting reps for the day

The goal is to get back to your plan’s effort level without pretending the day is fine.

Two important caveats

1) RIR is a skill

At around two years in, most lifters can estimate RIR reasonably well, but it’s still imperfect.

So compare your self-estimates to your results across sets and days.

If your “RIR drop” repeatedly predicts that you grind sooner next time, you’re learning correctly.

2) Sometimes the plan was too ambitious

If your warm-up felt slow, your joints feel off, or you had poor sleep, the “same reps, lower RIR” might not be a load problem. It might be a readiness problem.

Reducing load next set is still correct. Over time, those repeated misses tell you whether you should reduce intensity in the next session or plan a deload sooner.
