When Reps Move but RIR Drifts: Use an Effort Trend Check to Spot Progress or Fatigue Masking

RIR (reps in reserve: how many more good reps you could have done when you stopped) is useful because it adds effort to the rep count. The problem is that those two signals do not always move together.
You might press the same weight for 10 reps instead of 8, but your RIR can fall from 3 to 1. That is not the same result as doing 10 reps with 3 RIR. You completed more reps, but each set cost more effort.
This is where an effort trend check helps. Instead of asking whether reps went up, ask whether reps and effort are improving together across several exposures. That gives you a better read on progress, fatigue, and whether your next move should be more reps, more load, or simply better recovery.
Reps and effort are separate signals
A rep count tells you what happened. RIR gives you a rough estimate of how hard it was. You need both to interpret the set.
Imagine 100 kg on a pressing exercise:
- Session 1: 8 reps at 3 RIR
- Session 2: 9 reps at 2 RIR
- Session 3: 10 reps at 1 RIR
Your capacity may be improving, because you are completing more work with the same load. But your effort is also drifting harder. That can happen when fatigue is building, when rest periods shrink, or when you are intentionally pushing closer to failure.
Now compare that with this trend:
- Session 1: 8 reps at 3 RIR
- Session 2: 9 reps at 3 RIR
- Session 3: 10 reps at 3 RIR
That is a cleaner sign of progress. You are doing more reps without paying for them with a higher effort rating. Progressive overload (gradually increasing the training demand) is working, and the current load is becoming easier to handle.
Neither example makes a single session useless. The point is to stop treating every extra rep as proof that you should immediately add weight.
Log the rep-RIR pair, not just the rep count
For each challenging set, record four things:
- The load used.
- The reps completed.
- Your RIR estimate.
- The set number and rest period.
The set number matters because the first set and the third set answer different questions. If set one improves but set three falls apart, you may have gained performance at the start of the exercise without improving your repeat-set capacity.
Keep the exercise setup consistent enough to make comparisons useful. Note major changes such as a different bar, grip, stance, tempo, or longer rest. These details do not need to become a second job, but they explain why the same load can feel different.

Run the effort trend check across three exposures
Use the last three comparable sessions for the exercise. Three exposures are not a scientific law, but they are enough to reduce the chance that one bad night or unusually good session controls your decision.
1. Compare reps and RIR in the same direction
The strongest progress signal is more reps with the same or higher RIR. The same number of reps with higher RIR is also progress. In both cases, the work is becoming more manageable.
A mixed signal is more reps with lower RIR. Read this as: your capacity is moving up, but the cost is moving up too. Hold the load or stay within the current rep range until the effort stabilizes.
2. Look for a repeated RIR shift
Do not overreact to a one-point change in RIR on one set. RIR is an estimate, not a laboratory measurement. A shift from 2 to 1 can reflect a real difference, a shorter rest period, or a slightly stricter rep standard.
The pattern matters more when RIR drops by about 1 across two or three exposures while reps stay flat or decline. That is a useful fatigue warning, especially if several exercises show the same trend.
3. Check what happened outside the set
Fatigue masking is accumulated tiredness making your strength look worse than it currently is. It can come from poor sleep, low food intake, a hard conditioning session, extra work elsewhere, or too many demanding sets packed together.
If reps fall and RIR also falls, fatigue is a likely explanation. If reps fall while RIR stays the same or rises, check technique, setup, range of motion, and the accuracy of your load log before changing the whole plan.
4. Decide from the pattern, not the best set
One unusually good first set can hide a decline in later sets. Compare the average across the exercise, or at least compare the same set positions. Your third set from this week should be compared with your third set from last week.

Control the variables before calling it fatigue
A trend is only useful when the comparison is reasonably fair. Keep your rest periods close to the same length. A set performed after 90 seconds is not directly comparable with one performed after four minutes.
Use a consistent rep standard. Do not count a shortened rep as progress one week and reject it the next. Keep the exercise order stable when possible, since a movement performed after several hard exercises will carry more local and overall fatigue.
Also separate local fatigue from broader fatigue. If only your final set of one exercise feels worse, the issue may be the earlier sets or the rest interval. If your squat, row, and press all show lower RIR at similar loads, recovery is the more likely suspect.
A three-session example
Say you are working with 60 kg on an overhead press:
- Week 1: 8, 8, 7 reps at 3, 2, 2 RIR
- Week 2: 9, 8, 8 reps at 2, 2, 1 RIR
- Week 3: 9, 9, 8 reps at 2, 1, 1 RIR
Reps are moving upward, so there is probably some real progress. But RIR is drifting down, particularly on the later sets. The exercise is becoming more demanding to repeat, not clearly easier.
The best response is usually to keep 60 kg for another exposure, preserve rest periods, and avoid adding weight just because the first set reached 9 reps. If the next session produces 10, 9, 9 reps at 3, 2, 2 RIR, the progress signal is much stronger. You gained reps and recovered the same effort level.
If instead the next session drops to 8, 7, 6 reps at 1, 0, 0 RIR, stop chasing the target. Hold the load, reduce a hard set if needed, and check sleep, food, and recent training stress.
Use the trend to choose your next move
Use these simple rules:
- More reps with stable RIR: progress within your planned rep range.
- More reps with RIR falling: hold the load and collect another exposure.
- Flat or lower reps with RIR falling: treat it as a fatigue warning.
- Lower reps with stable or higher RIR: check technique, setup, and the day before changing the plan.
If the fatigue pattern appears across multiple lifts for more than a week, a deload, a planned short period of easier training, may be appropriate. You do not need to wait until every set misses its target.
The payoff is a better progression decision. Reps tell you whether output changed. RIR tells you what that output cost. Track both, compare three exposures, and you can add load when the performance is repeatable rather than when one set happens to look good.
